The Amazing Sally Wainwright
Surely everyone knows about the phenomenal and best TV dramas “Happy Valley”, “Last Tango in Halifax” and “Unforgiven”. All these amazing and one-of-a-kind BBC dramas was created by the best playwright and writer Sally Wainwright. Sally was highly recognized for her award winning and superior drama pieces. She was entitled by the RTS as the ‘Writer of the Year’ way back in 2009 for her best T.V drama “Unforgiven”. This 3-part television drama series (starring Surrane Jones) first appeared on ITV and UTV in year 2009 and become a big hit for audiences because of its unique plot and drama twist.
Sally was born in 1963 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire (England). Do you know that Sally Wainwrights also became a bus driver? Yes, she had her bus driving job before she begin writing “The Archers” for Radio 4 soap series. She actually developed her writing experience after she took a drama play to Edinburg Festival after she graduated from her university. She also take part on writing for ‘Coronation Street’ which further develops her writing skills. Key Mellor become her mentor and encourage her to do original work instead of soap opera writing. Due to her persistent and motivated heart, Wainwright masterpieces was being recognized and received a numerous prestigious awards.
Because of Wainwrights’ exceptional talent in making an excellent T.V dramas, she won the RTS ‘Writer of the Year’ award (for Unforgiven) and the BFTA’s “Best Writer” award (for “Last Tango in the Halifax). She also won the ‘British Academy Television Award’ for “Best Drama Series” (2013 and 2015), the ‘Edgar Award’ for “Best Television Episode Teleplay” (2015) and the ‘British Television Craft Award’ for writer (2013 and 2015). One of her award-wining recent masterpiece which is the “Happy Valley” typically centers on feminist type of drama.
“Happy Valley” was said to be her best Television Drama ever created. It was directed by Euros Lyn, Tim Fywell and Sally Wainwright herself, and Karen Lewis as the producer. The story generally focuses on the character of Sarah Lancashire (Catherine Cawood), a strong-willed Yorkshire police sergeant who are investigating about her daughter’s suicidal death. Just as the lady seems to get back on her normal life, she spotted James Norton (Tommy Lee Royce) the man whom she believes to be responsible for her daughter’s brutal rape that leads her to commit suicide. Things become more exciting and trilling as she seek for the truth behind her daughter’s death, there are many twist and turn as the story continues.
Most of her best TV dramas received a lot of appreciation coming from well-known directors and received hoards of excellent reviews. Wainwrights’ strong feminist character drove her drama pieces to be unique and more appealing. She even said that her feminist-drama style arrived to be more realistic to her. According to her, some of her feminine characters depicts her mother’s experiences which she turns into a T.V series. Sally added that she wanted to control the television by creating excellent T.V dramas that anyone would love and viewers shouldn’t not miss.
